Development of The Body with Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. Our physical therapists at Ellis PT utilize this technique on a daily basis with our patients. It can address a variety of conditions including arthritis, shoulder pain, back painhip or knee pain, and a variety of other conditions.

Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. It primarily focuses on unifying superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spinal and mobility.

Core strength and torso stability, along with the six key principles, sets this method apart from many other types of exercise.  Weight lifting, running, and swimming put emphasis on range of motion and strengthening muscles, however does not centralize a focus on spinal alignment and mobility.
